Austria · Marble
also known as Adneter Marmor, Red Adnet, Salzburg Red
Quarried since the Roman period in the village of Adnet near Salzburg, this burgundy-red marble owes its dramatic colour to iron oxides and its distinctive character to the white fossil shells and crinoids embedded in the matrix. Used in Salzburg Cathedral, St Peter's Basilica in Rome and throughout Central European Baroque architecture. A statement material for feature walls, fireplace surrounds and hotel lobbies.
Type-level physical facts shown. Per-lot lab values (absorption, flexural strength) confirmed at quotation.
The deep burgundy-red matrix comes from iron oxide pigmentation in the Triassic reef limestone. The bright white or cream patches are fossil shells, crinoid stems and coral fragments that accumulated on the ancient seabed.
Adnet is a compact marble with good abrasion resistance for a limestone-origin stone. Polished floors are possible in residential or boutique hotel settings; honed is recommended for busy commercial areas.
