Artik Tuff

also known as Armenian Pink Tuff, Artik Rose, Armenian Volcanic Stone, Artik Stone

The rose-pink volcanic tuff from Artik (Gyumri region) is arguably Armenia's most distinctive and exported stone: it is the pink-warm material of ancient Armenian monasteries (Noravank, Geghard, Etchmiadzin), Soviet-era civic buildings, and much of downtown Yerevan. Lighter than most stones and easily carved, it has excellent thermal insulation properties. Its unique warm salmon-pink is unmistakable. Exported globally for luxury interiors, accent walls, and heritage-inspired architectural projects.

Good to know

Is Artik Tuff the pink stone seen in photos of Yerevan?

Yes. The famous "pink city" character of central Yerevan comes from Artik and similar tuffs used for Soviet-era and older buildings. The stone is integral to Armenian architectural identity and one of the country's most recognisable exports.

Is volcanic tuff durable for exterior use?

Armenian tuff has good exterior durability in dry and semi-arid climates and has survived for centuries on Armenian churches. In very wet or freeze-thaw-intensive climates, the higher porosity relative to marble or granite requires more frequent maintenance.
