Biancone di Asiago

also known as Biancone Vicentino, Asiago White, Cretaceous White Limestone, Biancone Veneto

Biancone di Asiago is a pale white-cream pelagic limestone from the Cretaceous period, quarried on the Asiago plateau in the Vicenza foothills, Veneto. Used extensively in Venetian Renaissance palaces, Palladian villas, and Veronese churches. Finer and more consistent than Botticino, it offers a clean, refined white-to-cream surface with minimal fossil markings. Particularly valued for floor tiles and wall cladding in Venetian-style interiors and restoration projects.

Good to know

Is Biancone di Asiago the same as Pietra di Vicenza?

They are related but distinct. Biancone is a fine-grained pelagic Cretaceous limestone: pale, uniform, refined. Pietra di Vicenza (Nanto stone) is a yellowish Eocene biocalcarenite: warmer, more porous, and typically used for carved facade elements and rustic villa architecture.

Is this stone from the same region as Giallo d'Istria?

No. Giallo d'Istria (Pietra d'Istria) is a dense yellow limestone from the Istrian peninsula used as the primary building stone of Venice itself. Biancone di Asiago is from the mainland hills above Vicenza and has a cooler, whiter appearance.
