Origin & quarry

Emperador Dark is quarried in Alicante and Murcia provinces, southeastern Spain, in the Pre-Betic limestone belt shared with Crema Marfil. Emperador Dark and Emperador Light are distinct varieties from overlapping quarry zones; the Dark has a more saturated brown ground and finer, denser veining. Quarried since at least the 19th century for European palace and hotel interiors.

Geology. Metamorphic limestone of Jurassic origin. The deep brown-chocolate matrix derives from iron oxide content in the calcite crystal structure. Fine white and ochre calcite veins fill tectonic fractures in the same Pre-Betic belt that produces Crema Marfil.

Where it works

Specify with confidence

  • Luxury hotel lobbies and bar counters — the dark warm tone anchors high-contrast palettes
  • Fireplace surrounds and feature walls
  • Vanity tops and bathroom floors
  • Banding and contrast borders with Crema Marfil or light limestone

Use with care

  • Not exterior-grade in freeze-thaw climates — use interior only
  • Fine veins can carry micro-fissures; inspect and fill on delivery
  • Acid-sensitive: seal before use in wet areas

Good to know

What pairs well with Emperador Dark?

It is most often combined with Crema Marfil for classic two-tone floors, Versailles patterns and borders — warm tones from the same Spanish Pre-Betic belt. For a crisper contrast, pairing with Bianco Carrara or Thassos gives a high-drama black-and-white read.

Where is Emperador Dark quarried?

In the provinces of Alicante and Murcia in southeastern Spain, in the same Pre-Betic limestone belt that produces Crema Marfil. The principal quarrying zones are around Pinoso (Alicante) and Cehegín (Murcia). Emperador Light comes from overlapping quarries in the same region.

Is Emperador Dark suitable for flooring?

Yes for interior residential and hospitality floors with proper sealing. Specify polished where elegance is the goal; honed where slip-resistance matters. It is not exterior-grade — the calcite content makes it vulnerable to freeze-thaw damage and acid rain outdoors.
