Origin & quarry

Nero Portoro is the black-and-gold marble of Portovenere on the Ligurian coast — a small, historic source. Its dramatic gold veining over a deep black ground has made it a luxury and Art Deco signature.

Geology. Metamorphic dark limestone/marble; deep black ground with gold and white calcite veining (the gold from iron-bearing calcite).

Where it works

Specify with confidence

  • Statement vanity tops and islands
  • Feature walls and bar fronts
  • Reception desks and joinery inlay
  • Bespoke furniture tops

Use with care

  • Acid- and scratch-sensitive — polished black shows everything; seal and treat as a feature surface
  • Interior only; not for floors in high traffic

Italian Nero Portoro used in feature surfaces including the bar and private dining rooms, valued for the contrast with gold and cream interiors.

Good to know

Why is Portoro expensive?

It comes from a small, historic source in Liguria, the gold veining must be matched across pieces, and demand for genuine Italian black-and-gold marble is high. Beware cheaper look-alikes sold under the name.

Where should Portoro be used?

As a feature: vanity tops, bar fronts, reception desks and inlay. It is a decorative marble, not a hard-wearing floor stone.
