Origin & quarry

Verde Alpi (Alpine Green) comes from the Ossola valley in Piedmont, one of the few active serpentinite quarries in Italy. The deep forest-green comes from the serpentine mineral group; the white interlace is calcite that crystallised into fissures. Each block is a natural mosaic — no two pieces are identical, which makes it a signature material for architectural statement work.

Geology. Serpentinite (ophicalcite): metamorphic rock from ultramafic precursors, predominantly antigorite serpentine with white calcite veins intruded along fracture planes. Commercially classified and tested as marble under ASTM C503.

Where it works

Specify with confidence

  • Interior accent walls and feature panels
  • Column cladding and architectural millwork
  • Decorative inlays and opus sectile floors
  • Hotel lobbies and reception desks

Use with care

  • Strictly interior: not frost-resistant, never specify exterior in freezing climates
  • Avoid acids — the calcite veins react quickly
  • Seal before grouting — porous along vein planes
  • Select blocks carefully: fissuring risk is real, book-matching amplifies movement

Piedmontese Baroque and Neoclassical palace interiors

Historic architecture · Piedmont, Italy · 17th–19th century

Verde Alpi was the marble of choice for the ducal and noble residences of the House of Savoy — column facing, wainscoting and floor inlays across the main palaces of Turin and the Piedmontese court.

Contemporary luxury hotel feature walls

The deep green and white contrast make Verde Alpi a go-to accent stone for luxury hospitality where impact is the brief — it reads as opulent against light marbles and dark joinery alike.

Good to know

Is Verde Alpi a true marble?

It is classified and traded as a marble but is technically a serpentinite: a metamorphic rock derived from ultramafic rock. The polished result is indistinguishable from decorative marble in commercial applications.

Can Verde Alpi be used outdoors?

No. Serpentinite is frost-sensitive and should be kept to interiors. It will not perform in climates with freeze-thaw cycles.

How variable is the colour and veining across blocks?

Very variable. The green ground ranges from pale sage to deep forest green, and the calcite veins from fine white lines to bold interlace. Block selection and mock-up are essential for any significant installation.
