Imperial Porphyry

also known as Porfido Rosso Antico, Egyptian Porphyry

The purple stone of emperors. Quarried only at Mons Porphyrites in the Egyptian desert and reserved, in antiquity, for imperial use. An intensely hard igneous rock of deep purple-red flecked with white: the rarest and most storied of the antique stones.

Why was Imperial Porphyry reserved for emperors?

Its single source in the Egyptian desert and its deep imperial purple made it a symbol of sovereignty; in Rome and Byzantium its use was effectively restricted to the emperor.
