Kanfanar Limestone

also known as Kanfanar Stone, Istrian Limestone (Kanfanar quarry)

A very compact, fine-grained cream-white Cretaceous limestone from the Kanfanar quarry in central Istria, Croatia. Historically the most-exported Istrian stone to Venice, Trieste and the broader Adriatic: its exceptional density and near-zero absorption made it the standard for quaysides, column bases and exterior facades across centuries. Distinct from the broader Pietra d'Istria category by its precise quarry origin and characteristically tight grain.

Good to know

Why is Istrian stone used in Venice?

Istrian limestone is exceptionally dense and resistant to salt water, freeze-thaw cycles and biological attack — ideal for a city built on water. Its pale colour and extraordinary durability made it the preferred exterior stone of Venetian Gothic architecture.
