Naxos White Marble

also known as Marmo di Nasso, Naxos Marble, Cycladic White

A coarse-grained, pure white metamorphic marble from the island of Naxos in the Cyclades. One of the oldest marbles in the Western sculptural tradition — the Kouroi of the Archaic period and many Cycladic figurines were carved from Naxian marble. Characterised by its large sparkling calcite crystals (up to 3 mm), the stone has a granular, slightly sugary texture quite different from the finer-grained Pentelic or Parian marbles. Today it is quarried for architectural use and sculptural commissions. Its pure white colouration and pronounced crystalline shimmer make it a prestige choice for bespoke interior features.

Good to know

How does Naxos marble differ from Thassos?

Thassos is often the finest-grained and most brilliant white Greek marble; Naxos is coarser-grained with visible large crystals. Thassos is preferred for high-gloss polished floors; Naxos is favoured for sculptural work and honed architectural surfaces.

Were the ancient Kouroi statues really made from Naxian marble?

Yes — the large Archaic Kouroi found on Naxos and other Cycladic islands, including the famous Colossus at Naxos (an unfinished statue still in the quarry), were carved from Naxian marble. The island's ancient quarries can still be visited today.
