Pietra Serena

also known as Fiesole Stone, Macigno di Fiesole, Blue Tuscan Stone

Brunelleschi's stone. Pietra Serena is the dark blue-grey sandstone quarried above Fiesole near Florence, used by Brunelleschi and Michelangelo to define the grey articulation of Florence's greatest Renaissance interiors including the Pazzi Chapel, Santo Spirito and Santa Croce. Good to know

Why is Pietra Serena so associated with Renaissance architecture?

Brunelleschi and later Michelangelo used it to delineate architectural elements (pilasters, arches, cornices) against white plaster walls — the grey-on-white contrast is the visual signature of Florentine Renaissance interiors.

Is it suitable for contemporary interiors?

Absolutely. Its cool charcoal-grey tone is highly sought after for contemporary minimalist flooring, wall linings and feature panels. Honed finish recommended; seal for kitchen use.
