Pietra Lavica dell'Etna

also known as Etna Lava Stone, Lava Stone Sicily, Pietra Vulcanica

The volcanic basalt of Mount Etna, quarried from the ancient lava flows of the Catania province in Sicily. Intensely black, very hard and durable, with a naturally rough texture that offers excellent grip and a visual drama that no sedimentary stone can replicate. Good to know

Is Etna lava stone the same as regular basalt?

It is a form of basalt, but its volcanic-flow origin gives it specific properties: a very dark, almost metallic black colour, exceptional hardness, and a slightly vesicular texture that varies by quarry layer. The porous finish is sealed for interior use.

What is it primarily used for?

Outdoor paving, pool surrounds and exterior hardscape where its non-slip surface and extreme durability are assets. Seen throughout Catania's historic streets, it is also specified for contemporary hospitality terraces and accent surfaces.
